Losing Isaiah (and I hope the word ‘faggot’)

Started by ybpguide · 9 months ago

Words have power, and far too often we see them used to dehumanize people because of our differences.
The above quote is from Isaiah Washington over a PSA he did for GLAAD after his much maligned use of the word “faggot.” Well, the star was not asked to return to Gre ... Continue reading »

  • I honestly didn't want Isaiah to go at first. I will admit that the story line was more important to me than his disrespect for another group of people. But since then, I've acknowledged how unacceptable what he did was. PLUS he had to be let go if the show was going to keep being heralded as a model for diversity and openness.
  • I'm a big fan of Isaiah's, but I totally agree with your p-o-v. I'll miss his superb presence on Grey's Anatomy, but more than that, I'm sickened by how easy it is for people to express hate.
  • Not sure I agree with the show's creator on this decision
  • Mike, please explain.
  • Anyone who uses the word "hullabaloo" really impresses me. :) Your post is wonderful, and it's really made me recognize the ownership I have taken of the term "fag." I think it has a place, and I don't know what can replace it. Maybe we should stop using it, but I think we need a term like "fag" because it focuses on our common homosexuality and celebrates openness. Ironically, I don't thing all gay men attain fag status. While some gay men pass, a fag personifies fabulousness, defiance, courage, and authenticity. Everyone should feel free to express his truth, but society is less accepting of some truths, and we know this. So, if good friends are sharing a meal and replying to a uniquely gay, witty comment, someone laughs and exclaims: "You are such a fag," I see that as a compliment celebrating that courage and authenticity. I'm sure the delivery matters, and maybe a better term exists, but I'm drawing a blank.
