YBPGuide: Pick Me Up?

  • Dave J · 2 years ago
For around a year now I have been drinking green tea. I used to drink coffee in the morning, and again after supper. All totaled it was about 6 cups a day. I was deeply entrenched in the culture of drinking coffee, and totally addicted to the boost it gave me.

I was afraid that quitting would be an ordeal, but it really wasn't. I was over it in about 3 weeks of cold turkey. The tea helps with such a transition, because it does have caffeine in it (in much smaller amounts) and it gives you something to warm your throat and belly, which replaces the comfort factor we lose by eliminating coffee from our daily intake.

Shouts to the green tea. Also shouts to apples, particularly Granny Smith. Studies have shown (lol) that the natural sugars in apples are substantially more effective than coffee in terms of keeping one alert and energized-

Green tea contains caffeine, albeit a lot less, therefore your still are relying on it...There are even more articles and studies that show that caffeine does increase CNS stimulation being that it is a stimulant (bind to adenosine receptors in the brain causing disinhibition of NE). So maybe we should check some other sources that show that coffee does more that return us to "normal".

AB, there is little doubt that caffeine is a stimulant. What I and the researchers are relying on is the idea that "coffee’s ability to increase alertness derives from only periodic consumption." Meaning, if anyone is consuming coffee daily, as with any other drug, your body begins to tolerate it and you will subsequently need more to get to that level of alertness you desire as time, and the habit, goes on. More specifically the suggestion is when you wake up in the morning and feel that itch for caffeine you are responding MORE to a self-created, physiological need than an inane desire to be more alert.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm off the sauce now.

I was such a caffeine freak.

But that Starbucks has been calling my name lately...
