but, i will always admire those who have money and power, something fleeting in today's black elite.
big ups to mr. perry.
Mr. Tyler's story of success is great, taking nothing away from him. But the best acting on the show is that of the boy who plays the son. Everyone else, especially the older male's character, seems slapstick and overdone.
But let's be honest. Different types of art appeal to different types of audiences. Mr Tyler's comedy is often low/medium brow. And I grow bored of that type of humor quickly. But there are others, a mass of others, who love and can't get enough of it.
Enjoy it and much success to all who are apart of it. But I won't be Tivo-ing any episodes of "House of Payne".
Even in the examples I don't see anyone hating on Perry. In fact they're doing exactly what you say you don't have a problem with--hating on his PRODUCTIONS because they fall flat.
When you mischaracterize the nature of folks' misgivings it makes it much easier for you to get to what appears to be your central point--that black people seem to be suffering from the crabs in a barrel syndrome in regards to Perry.
And I don't buy it. I don't know ANYONE who can't stand Tyler Perry. Everyone I know has a problem with his PRODUCTIONS. And I'm one of them.
it's not like he's playing a character in a play. he's bringing his ideas and money to his productions....which ultimately reflect who he is as a person.
you did well in the class...but let's say you didn't. why would your grade in the class reflect how i thought of you as a PERSON? you don't think it's possible to get an A, and have questionable morals/ethics? You don't think it's possible to get an F and be a sweetheart?
if i'm an asshole, but i write eloquently my asshole point of view, i can still get my 'A' and say who i am.
i sincerely doubt someone can write, direct, and produce something that has zero reflection of who they are as a person.
in fact, don't most artists claim that their ideas 'are from the heart' and 'genuine'? isn't the best comedy from genius comedians who can put their own unique point of view on a subject?
It's happened to me before, and I think any artist has a hard time separating the efforts of their hard work from themselves. Especially when people dwell on the negative.
Also, when I think of hating, I don't think of how the critic truly feels about the other person. More times than not the hateful words are just a cover up for the critics own personal issues. What is more so my central point, is that everywhere in the media I see people talk negatively about something positive that someone else is doing. Whether it's Obama, Al Gore, or Tyler Perry, all these negative comments or reviews seem to be just opinions with egos. How about we try to give each other more pats on the back instead of carrying around so much hate.
How they feel about ME is another issue....
And this is what I gather from both of your comments. In neither case do you appear to really acknowledge the possibility that Tyler Perry can be making tons of money, employing black folk, and still be making poor product. In fact, given that the show DOES hearken back to seventies stereotypes--as do his films--it is also possible that his product is not only poor, but would be labeled racist if produced by someone white.
I have a very different view about criticism--about its worth, about its necessity. Tyler Perry is likely as cool as the other side of the pillow. I'd love to talk to him about the hardships he's faced becoming who he is.
But frankly his work sets black people back years. And the more criticism like this we have, the better it makes all of us.
This coming from someone who's middle name is "Sorry, your paper has been rejected."
So from a YBP perspective is he being treated just like any other producer from any other background and laughing all the way to the bank? IMHO that is equality achieved and a good result for him.....still wouldn't hurt if a bit of that $$$$ found its way to a charitable foundation would it?
Your friend,
Akbar "Tracy" Cojoe
From what I've seen, Tyler Perry, despite being one, hates black people with money.
Overweight women are loud, obnoxious, dark-skinned except for Jill Scott, whose in a fat suit. God forbid he actually show a real-life
woman whose overweight and exercises (and out of breath like that one lady from the tv show) and eats right and is the love interest.
No, instead he has Janet Jackson whose tied with her brother for the most plastic surgery by a black celeb within the last 10-15 years, playing the lead.
His movies are too preachy and I don't think he's a good writer but he's a decent filmmaker and I don't hate him as a person, I just think he's overrated.
Check out this good interview of Tasha Smith who played "Angela" - the funniest thing I've seen in film in a long time:

I really feel like the reason he receives bad reviews are, because most folks don't understand his work, and could really care less about black entertainment. Another reason is because he owns his own production company, and is successful without having to go to Hollywood for distribution. Mr. Perry keep doing what you're doing, and I will always be a fan of your work.
I'm so fucking tired of everyone one of his stories having a female lead who moves down south with, lets face it, niggas. Just to get "blacker" and eventually find love.
If I'm wrong, I described the majority of his movies.
Tyler Perry makes blacks look bad because we're his target market and whites know it!
Maybe I'm mad because people ignored BET. "BET doesn't define me so it isn't hurting me." but it is. It is called Black Entertainment Television! It was MADE FOR BLACK PEOPLE! And yet, theres nothing we can do to fix it!
Our black family shows used to have blacks that lived lives that weren't so focused on steroetypes, but actual characters. If you gave them white, asian, or pruple characters the story would mostly be the same. But I'm tired of these crap movies being made in the name of Black America. A reefer smoking black grandma thats I'm supposed to connect with my ASS! Lets think of how we can fix our image before we perpetuate weed use among African Americans. We're 13% of Americas population. We can be drowned ot by the white voices any day. So lets not allow this to happen... wellatleast not yet.
But I will say this. I admire this black Man for only one thing. He did something with his life that gives him pleasure. He's gonna be in the next Star Trek. Lets hope he does well, beccause thats what Martin Luther King would want, instead of just hating on the brutha. Much love to the guy... I still don agree with him... (Fuck his moves and plays, but I hope he does well in life)
one thing i will say is that although why did i get married was a great movie, did he have to make jill scott look so damn pathetic? i mean she got dumped and wasn't happy again until she found another man....she just couldn't find happiness in herself huh?
I'm in a music and theater ministry and I've seen awsome singers and singers that didn't sound so good. However, there are those "awsome singers" that, even though they sang circles around the competition, there was something hollow about it... something missing.
So we have someone else come along whose not as "talented" vocally as the other BUT, there's "something" about him/her.
Thats where we come do the difference between "talented" and "anointed".
The talented one sounds great and appeals to emotions. The anointed one Doen't sound as great, but it gets to your soul. And that's what Tylers production are designed for. Ministry to the soul. To gain souls for Christ. So Tyler may not be John Singleton or Spike Lee or Ridley Scott. He doesn't need to be. God gave him just enough for what he needs to get His(God) job. done
Tyler has some good ideals but over all he's
weak! back to the drawing board and stop putting the movies and plays out so fast and give ussomething to be proud of I knw you can do it. One more thing boot leg dvds. You almost have to buy his productions boot leg, in order to see if he's copying someone elses lines or it is the same old, same old before you go to the store and buy it for your collection.
Ive never heared of anyone hating on Tyler Perry himself, most people I know love him.
I personally thought Diary of a Black Women wasn't that great of a movie, and I didn't particularly like it very much, however my Mother loved it, so whatever.
I really admire Tyler Perry, because I really admire anyone who came out of poverty to become someone wealthy, because I myself am currently trying to escape the pressures of being a teenager who already has to pay bills for my family. My father doesn't exist an my Mother is in poor health an never got her GED so I'm having to do whatever is nessesary to stay alive, but I simply don't like his plays.
While hanging out at one of my friends houses a couple of days ago I saw "Madea goes to jail".
I like how his plays reach a demographic that doesn't get much entertainment tailer made for them, however the steriotypes put into it were so in your face that it was almost impossible to bear, everything negative I had ever heared said about Black People an there steriotypical behaviours was portrayed an glorified.
Being a White Man, honestly I felt semi uncomfortable watching a movie that I felt was nothing more than a modern blaxsplotation movie with a group of my friends. (BTW they are all black, the ones who watched it with me).
I really left my friends house feeling almost depression. Maybe I don't understand it, maybe its a Black thing, but honestly I left that house an for that day I will admit I looked at Black People differently for that day. It was just difficult seeing so much ignorance glamorized on a screen, sitting next to all my friends cracking up, than walking back home in my economically depressed neighborhood an not feeling "They really are different from us." an later I realized that minstrel shows still do exist. However, now White People don't even perform in them, and that really is sad.
I know my opinion is probably not important to anyone on this site, an maybe I don't get it because "Its a Black thing", however its my opinion, and race relations are important to me. I personally would be ashamed an hate any White Person who made millions by exploiting my race an making a career by writing plays which are a greatest hits of negative White Stereotypes. Filled with Racist crackers in white hoods, country music, meth addicts in trailers an portrayed it as a comedy. I would label that person a sellout an not even want to consider them part of my race.
Please e-mail me Shica
THANKS TYLER FOR BEING AN EXAMPLE AND MAKING IT HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF GOD BLESS!
One thing we as black have to stop allowing one member of our race validate us, I am who I am because God said I am me, not one from my race can speak for me, but me, though man has tried to bind us in a box , I will never allow it for me and my kinds because I'm an individual who can think independently from her race, .....We must know who we are in order to embrace Mr. Perry's works such as I do........ His work is not offensive to me though I am a dark-skinned, big beautiful woman who happens to enjoy every one of my brothers movies, plays and sitcom, If anything he's truly and inspiration to the African American community. I 've learned that people are always going to criticize things they have no understanding about. Even Jesus had to deal with critic in his day ....Oh! one last thing...Nothing on earth is original, before he did it it was done by another, and before him another on down to the money in the cave! lol
Please leave that "black" thing aside. It's not trendy anymore :-)
Why does "some" of our culture love to celebrate well marketed ignorance. Tyler Perry is right there with Soulja Boy and Soul Plane. Laugh at it but dont get it confused and call it good.
I think that's what is happening with TP.
The only opposition I have with Perry's work of art is sometimes the stories are corny and the story lines use to be too similar to one another.
I don't care about his acomplishments... So he went from the bottom to the top.. .. So did Hitler. Do you want me to like Hitler, too?
I don't like his cheesy humor. On the contrary, why must his success dictate whether or not I'm permitted to personally hold an opinion based solely on the merits of his craft? I hear this kind of reasoning often when it comes to African American entertainers, and it seems to be that whether it's P. Diddy, West, or Smith, that content is secondary to noting the accomplishment. Woods is a great golf player, and his accomplishment in the face of a white-dominated field is spectacular. But his success is measured by his performance on the golf course. I cannot deny by any measure that he excels in his field. When it comes to artistic media though, it is a matter of taste and opinion. I find Perry's movies to be somewhat of an insult because it is a generic mishmash of Lifetime meets BET, made for television filler. His character Madea epitomizes the Big Momma stereotype (meets Ernest P. Warrell) and the philosophical variation among characters is lacking. Why do critics hate it? Read what they have to say.
"Then again, not being a hater myself, I’ll just never understand the logic."
Because your opinion isn't logical. Just because he is popular and successful does not mean he is good. Kid Rock, Britney Spears, and vapid reality television producers manage to sell their product with amazing success and the money to back it up. Does that make what they have of more quality than a BB King record? A Mozart composition? A recording of an authentic tribal drum ceremony? These works transcend cultural lines, whereas crap like Madea is just cheap filler, maybe meant to be fun, but certainly not any more 'inspirational' than reading the religious cards at Hallmark after you've just read the humor section.
