YBPGuide: Why do people hate on Tyler Perry?

  • Fredric · 2 years ago
you're right. i can't hate. i did before only because i just didn't like his style of humor.

but, i will always admire those who have money and power, something fleeting in today's black elite.

    big ups to mr. perry.
  • DNLee · 2 years ago
I'm not hating, but I don't fancy Mr. Tyler's productions. I watched the show and I wasn't impressed by the acting. The fact the characters are overweight isn't a problem. People who are lamenting about that are complaining for complaining sake. If everyone was thin and beautiful, then another set of people would complain about the lack of "real" people images.

Mr. Tyler's story of success is great, taking nothing away from him. But the best acting on the show is that of the boy who plays the son. Everyone else, especially the older male's character, seems slapstick and overdone.

But let's be honest. Different types of art appeal to different types of audiences. Mr Tyler's comedy is often low/medium brow. And I grow bored of that type of humor quickly. But there are others, a mass of others, who love and can't get enough of it.

Enjoy it and much success to all who are apart of it. But I won't be Tivo-ing any episodes of "House of Payne".
  • blacksmythe · 2 years ago
    Kim, this isn't right.

Even in the examples I don't see anyone hating on Perry. In fact they're doing exactly what you say you don't have a problem with--hating on his PRODUCTIONS because they fall flat.

When you mischaracterize the nature of folks' misgivings it makes it much easier for you to get to what appears to be your central point--that black people seem to be suffering from the crabs in a barrel syndrome in regards to Perry.

And I don't buy it. I don't know ANYONE who can't stand Tyler Perry. Everyone I know has a problem with his PRODUCTIONS. And I'm one of them.
  • Fredric · 2 years ago
so if he writes, produces, and directs it, wouldn't it automatically be a reflection of him by extension?

it's not like he's playing a character in a play. he's bringing his ideas and money to his productions....which ultimately reflect who he is as a person.
  • blacksmythe · 2 years ago
fred, you took a class with me.

you did well in the class...but let's say you didn't. why would your grade in the class reflect how i thought of you as a PERSON? you don't think it's possible to get an A, and have questionable morals/ethics? You don't think it's possible to get an F and be a sweetheart?
  • Fredric · 2 years ago
i think it's possible that my point of view and way i express it is not only reflective in the grade you give me, but communicates who i am.

if i'm an asshole, but i write eloquently my asshole point of view, i can still get my 'A' and say who i am.

i sincerely doubt someone can write, direct, and produce something that has zero reflection of who they are as a person.

in fact, don't most artists claim that their ideas 'are from the heart' and 'genuine'? isn't the best comedy from genius comedians who can put their own unique point of view on a subject?
  • Kimberly Michelle · 2 years ago
Well I am of the opinion that when people hate on the product (for whatever reason) they are by the same action not giving credit where credit is due. I have seen other remarks and harsh criticisms of Perry because of his depiction of black people and the characters in his shows- this tells me that some people cannot separate the two and give a person credit for be successful while still critiquing their work.
It's happened to me before, and I think any artist has a hard time separating the efforts of their hard work from themselves. Especially when people dwell on the negative.

Also, when I think of hating, I don't think of how the critic truly feels about the other person. More times than not the hateful words are just a cover up for the critics own personal issues. What is more so my central point, is that everywhere in the media I see people talk negatively about something positive that someone else is doing. Whether it's Obama, Al Gore, or Tyler Perry, all these negative comments or reviews seem to be just opinions with egos. How about we try to give each other more pats on the back instead of carrying around so much hate.
  • blacksmythe · 2 years ago
Fred I do think it is possible and even likely that you put who you are into what your classwork. And that likely means that when you get a poor grade you take the poor grade personally...but this doesn't have anything to do with the evaluator. I've given literally dozens of GOOD kids, low grades. Liked them when I taught them. Liked them after I gave them their grades.

How they feel about ME is another issue....

And this is what I gather from both of your comments. In neither case do you appear to really acknowledge the possibility that Tyler Perry can be making tons of money, employing black folk, and still be making poor product. In fact, given that the show DOES hearken back to seventies stereotypes--as do his films--it is also possible that his product is not only poor, but would be labeled racist if produced by someone white.

I have a very different view about criticism--about its worth, about its necessity. Tyler Perry is likely as cool as the other side of the pillow. I'd love to talk to him about the hardships he's faced becoming who he is.

But frankly his work sets black people back years. And the more criticism like this we have, the better it makes all of us.

This coming from someone who's middle name is "Sorry, your paper has been rejected."

I agree with you, Blacksmythe, that House of Payne sets us back years. I'm seeing the show today for the first time as a rerun on network TV. I can't even watch it. I'm appalled. We would all be up in arms if this show was the product of Caucasians. The type of characters and humor that might work in a play, or a movie, doesn't necessarily work for television. Now he's bringing these foolish characters into the living rooms of America giving "them" (and you know who I mean) validation for their steoreotypes. The show makes us look like stupid, backwards fools. Someone commented that the show was bought for an unprecedented 100 episodes. I can just hear them in the backoffice, "Sure, let's buy 100 episodes. Who cares if the show is any good or not, it's worth it to show these people for their true colors. And we don't even get blamed; they're writing this stuff about themselves." Mind you, I am very proud of what Mr. Perry has accomplished and I loved most of his plays, but at some point he has to take responsibility for kind of image that he's putting out there when it comes to television which is seen by the masses over and over again. We've worked hard for even the smallest of rights and respect. and he's, like you said, setting us back. One thing that I don't think Mr. Perry ever does, is to consult with our folks who have already gained respect, such as Bill Cosby to name one. Because Mr. Perry has been successful, he thinks whatever choices he makes are the best choices. He doesn't even know how to choose good actors but I digress.
  • ETS · 2 years ago
I honestly don't understand why people hate on Tyler's productions. I mean they are ok. But they ain't nowhere near half as bad as half the stuff we see on the regular.
  • Kimberly Michelle · 2 years ago
I'm thinking people just enjoy watching raunchy "dramas" like Flavor of Love/Charm School, Making the Band, and I Love New York, instead of positive comedy shows just trying to get an honest laugh.
  • Cobb · 2 years ago
When you are as old and uppity as I am, 'positive comedy shows just trying to get an honest laugh' just don't cut it any more. I got that from Fred Sanford. Show me something new.
  • B · 2 years ago
I imagine that some of the haters want to blame Perry for the fact that the black entertainment tends to be so one dimensional. I also imagine that some of the haters are scared of what good white people will think when they see black people behaving so "stereotypically" and "low brow." Overall, I agree that most of Perry's haters just have their own issues.
  • jezza · 2 years ago
Living in the land of Kangeroos, I must admit that I don't think I have ever seen one of this gentleman's shows. However based on the previous posts, it sounds as if his shows are a little low brow with stereotype characterisation. These type of shows always appeal to the masses, always get slammed by the critics and nearly always make the producer shedloads of dosh (money).
So from a YBP perspective is he being treated just like any other producer from any other background and laughing all the way to the bank? IMHO that is equality achieved and a good result for him.....still wouldn't hurt if a bit of that $$$$ found its way to a charitable foundation would it?
  • "yland" · 9 months ago
" wouldn't hurt if a bit of that $$$$ found it's way to a charitable foundation". It seems to me that you know nothing about this man. Tyler is constantly giving money to charity. He pays for people's college and offers to move families out of their current struggling society to a new home and environment with better opportunity. This man is such a true success story. I can not believe you people are on here speaking so ill of this man. But you know what? The fact of the matter is that Tyler is making something of his life despite what anyone of you have to say. I am a woman and Tyler is my mentor, he gives me hope that anyone, anyone can make it. Tyler could probably care less about any negative response that is thrown his way. At the end of the day, Tyler is making a difference in someone's life. Not to mention he's GETTING PAID and could tripple all yall's income numerous amount of times! So instead of dissing him you need to educate yourself on his strategie and GET LIKE HIM!!! HATERS!!!! But oh wait I forgot, haters don't succeed but the righteous always prevail. May all the success and much more money come to you Tyler! You are truly Blessed!!!!!!
  • Nicole · 2 years ago
There is SUCH a big difference in whether people are "hating" on Tyler Perry the person or Tyler Perry as a producer/writer/director. I love Tyler Perry to death for all that he has accomplished, however, some of his productions have been HORRIBLE low quality work, including House of Payne (I could barely stand to watch). It had nothing to do with what I think of Tyler Perry and his accomplishments (which I admire beyond words). It has to do with what I think is good quality work, which House of Payne, in my opinion is not. Let's face it, all successful writers/directors/producers fall flat sometimes. I don't feel that our role as black folk is to support work which we don't feel is to our liking. While I believe that most of us support him whole heartedly in his endeavors, I don't think many of us have the stomach for low quality humor and we shouldn't have to "support it" just because Tyler Perry is black. We aren't hating on "him" we are just as they say "keeping it real" honestly. LOL!

But MOST images we see in the media are one dimensional!!!! How often do you hear about them?
  • Akbar "Tracy" Cojoe · 2 years ago
I have known Mr. Perry since the year of Mariah Carey's debut album . It was prior to her celebrity, and her "Visions of Love" success. Ironically, Perry was actually the first person to introduce me to the diva. I mention this because, somehow, Tyler has always had an extra sense installed in him. In other words, he has always been known for his spectecular taste by those who know him. For those who do not know him, all I can say is that you're really, really missing out, thanks to artistic-restrictions. For those who do not realize that this man's comedic genius is being blocked by "broadcast media's police," then your "talent meter" is certainly off. Consider the House of Pain's 30 - 60 minute storylines an extended trailor of what Mr. Perry has to offer and what there is to come. I'm very proud of you, Tyler.

    Your friend,

lets be real. tyler perry does not set black people back years. so, house of payne has a black FIRE CHIEF (not just a fireman) in a decent house, with a complete family, and a son in college. sounds ok to me. while there is a crackhead on the show, and sometimes the characters are a bit extra, this is entertainment. though black folks are limited on television, as in there are only so many of us on tv, and hardly any all black shows on tv today, tyler's plays, tv show, and book provides entertainment--- not a definitive view of black people in america. people who are upset with perry and his productions mistakingly believe that is productions have to carry the burden of the black image in society. hell it is entertainment. and any pseudo-intellectuals need to get over it. if u dont like it turn the tv off, dont watch the plays, and dont buy the book. if u want to talk about setting black folks back years... watch BET for a day.

My problem with Tyler Perry - specifically the Madea films - is that he seems to portray every black man above a certain financial level as inherently abusive and evil. The only exception being Brian, one of the characters portrayed by Perry himself. The "good" men are always the blue-collar workers. What's the message? Success corrupts black men? Or is it only those kind of black men can be successful?
From what I've seen, Tyler Perry, despite being one, hates black people with money.
  • Toussaint · 1 year ago
    I agree 100%
  • Olivia · 2 years ago
Well, I have to say, when Tyler Perry first came out with the plays, I had a closed-mind. I thought that it was bafoonery to the hilt. It took my daughter (13) saying that she thought I would like the plays, "Why Did I Get Married and Madea Goes to Jail,". Although I am an intellectual, I found these plays to be multi-dimensional. Everyone was not poor or in jail. Personally, I don't go to movies, if they seem to be negative. I like uplifting and inspirational plays and movies. You have to look past the exterior and get to the interior. All of his movies and plays have different messages. Remember, everything is not for everybody and anyone is entitled to their opinion, but that does not make it a fact to the rest of the world. Simply put, Tyler Perry is an inspiration to anyone who seeks to do great things in their lives! The only people who are being negative ARE the ones that have no dreams or goals of their own!! Stop hating on Tyler and gets some dreams and goals for yourself!!! If you are truly working on your individual goals and dreams, you don't have time to worry about what someone else is doing!!!!!
  • ybpreader · 2 years ago
@Big Man Films, one of the messages I get from Perry's plays, especially with reference to your comment, is that black women be more open to getting into relationships with blue collar men. And also as the saying goes... all that glitters is not gold.
  • Mari · 2 years ago
I'm a black woman who can't stand Tyler Perry. All of the ideas for his movies are modern-day rip-offs of Waiting to Exhale (Terry McMillan) and The Color Purple (Alice Walker). There's nothing original about him! Also, as a fat woman, I can't stand the weigh (pun intended) he portrays overweight people, especially women.

Overweight women are loud, obnoxious, dark-skinned except for Jill Scott, whose in a fat suit. God forbid he actually show a real-life
woman whose overweight and exercises (and out of breath like that one lady from the tv show) and eats right and is the love interest.

No, instead he has Janet Jackson whose tied with her brother for the most plastic surgery by a black celeb within the last 10-15 years, playing the lead.

His movies are too preachy and I don't think he's a good writer but he's a decent filmmaker and I don't hate him as a person, I just think he's overrated.

Co-sign Kim. The writing started off rough in the beginning. It felt like a play ... but when it got going, it was smooth sailing.

Check out this good interview of Tasha Smith who played "Angela" - the funniest thing I've seen in film in a long time:

I have seen most of Tyler Perry's plays and movies, and I enjoy them. I saw Meet the Brown's today, and I really enjoyed the movie.

I really feel like the reason he receives bad reviews are, because most folks don't understand his work, and could really care less about black entertainment. Another reason is because he owns his own production company, and is successful without having to go to Hollywood for distribution. Mr. Perry keep doing what you're doing, and I will always be a fan of your work.
  • Aaron · 1 year ago
I hate him because he is banking on steroetypes. No disrespect but I don't expect people to understand because those people perpetuate it.

I'm so fucking tired of everyone one of his stories having a female lead who moves down south with, lets face it, niggas. Just to get "blacker" and eventually find love.

If I'm wrong, I described the majority of his movies.

Tyler Perry makes blacks look bad because we're his target market and whites know it!

Maybe I'm mad because people ignored BET. "BET doesn't define me so it isn't hurting me." but it is. It is called Black Entertainment Television! It was MADE FOR BLACK PEOPLE! And yet, theres nothing we can do to fix it!

Our black family shows used to have blacks that lived lives that weren't so focused on steroetypes, but actual characters. If you gave them white, asian, or pruple characters the story would mostly be the same. But I'm tired of these crap movies being made in the name of Black America. A reefer smoking black grandma thats I'm supposed to connect with my ASS! Lets think of how we can fix our image before we perpetuate weed use among African Americans. We're 13% of Americas population. We can be drowned ot by the white voices any day. So lets not allow this to happen... wellatleast not yet.

But I will say this. I admire this black Man for only one thing. He did something with his life that gives him pleasure. He's gonna be in the next Star Trek. Lets hope he does well, beccause thats what Martin Luther King would want, instead of just hating on the brutha. Much love to the guy... I still don agree with him... (Fuck his moves and plays, but I hope he does well in life)
  • Tawanda · 1 year ago
i agree, kind of, with the man above. Tyler does bank of off black sterotypes. I cringe watching some of his movies because i'm embarrassed. But hey, this is what sells so.....

one thing i will say is that although why did i get married was a great movie, did he have to make jill scott look so damn pathetic? i mean she got dumped and wasn't happy again until she found another man....she just couldn't find happiness in herself huh?
  • Harold · 1 year ago
(sigh) there was at time that even when our brothers and sisters didn't do what we considered a "good job", we still loved each other anyway and didn't make apublic mockery of anyone that didn't do well. The reason for his success can be found right in his plays and movies.

I'm in a music and theater ministry and I've seen awsome singers and singers that didn't sound so good. However, there are those "awsome singers" that, even though they sang circles around the competition, there was something hollow about it... something missing.

So we have someone else come along whose not as "talented" vocally as the other BUT, there's "something" about him/her.
Thats where we come do the difference between "talented" and "anointed".

The talented one sounds great and appeals to emotions. The anointed one Doen't sound as great, but it gets to your soul. And that's what Tylers production are designed for. Ministry to the soul. To gain souls for Christ. So Tyler may not be John Singleton or Spike Lee or Ridley Scott. He doesn't need to be. God gave him just enough for what he needs to get His(God) job. done
  • lynn · 1 year ago
I am a preachers kid and I have seen a lot of things in Tyler movies that are real life. but it concerns me that no one in his plays are truley save. If they are not smoking, drinking, or using profane words. Come on, last time I checked hell and damm were profane words. If you not talking about not livig right and your soul is dammed and hell bound. Poor cora the only one I realy felt was saved, loving, understanding and God fearing is carring a pistal now and talking about who her mother is (you don't know me, you don't know who my moma is - I got something that can hold you) everyone has fallen short but she keeps the gun on her at all times fighting her own fight instead of letting God.
Tyler has some good ideals but over all he's
weak! back to the drawing board and stop putting the movies and plays out so fast and give ussomething to be proud of I knw you can do it. One more thing boot leg dvds. You almost have to buy his productions boot leg, in order to see if he's copying someone elses lines or it is the same old, same old before you go to the store and buy it for your collection.

Put it like this...every celebrity out there has haters. Kirk Franklin, i mean, whoever. You name it, they all have critics, they all have people against what they do. We don't know why and they themselves don't even know why. But, what?? It ain't stopped him from being successful.

I found this page on google.
Ive never heared of anyone hating on Tyler Perry himself, most people I know love him.

I personally thought Diary of a Black Women wasn't that great of a movie, and I didn't particularly like it very much, however my Mother loved it, so whatever.

I really admire Tyler Perry, because I really admire anyone who came out of poverty to become someone wealthy, because I myself am currently trying to escape the pressures of being a teenager who already has to pay bills for my family. My father doesn't exist an my Mother is in poor health an never got her GED so I'm having to do whatever is nessesary to stay alive, but I simply don't like his plays.

While hanging out at one of my friends houses a couple of days ago I saw "Madea goes to jail".

I like how his plays reach a demographic that doesn't get much entertainment tailer made for them, however the steriotypes put into it were so in your face that it was almost impossible to bear, everything negative I had ever heared said about Black People an there steriotypical behaviours was portrayed an glorified.

Being a White Man, honestly I felt semi uncomfortable watching a movie that I felt was nothing more than a modern blaxsplotation movie with a group of my friends. (BTW they are all black, the ones who watched it with me).

I really left my friends house feeling almost depression. Maybe I don't understand it, maybe its a Black thing, but honestly I left that house an for that day I will admit I looked at Black People differently for that day. It was just difficult seeing so much ignorance glamorized on a screen, sitting next to all my friends cracking up, than walking back home in my economically depressed neighborhood an not feeling "They really are different from us." an later I realized that minstrel shows still do exist. However, now White People don't even perform in them, and that really is sad.

I know my opinion is probably not important to anyone on this site, an maybe I don't get it because "Its a Black thing", however its my opinion, and race relations are important to me. I personally would be ashamed an hate any White Person who made millions by exploiting my race an making a career by writing plays which are a greatest hits of negative White Stereotypes. Filled with Racist crackers in white hoods, country music, meth addicts in trailers an portrayed it as a comedy. I would label that person a sellout an not even want to consider them part of my race.

He is a great influence on young teenagers because his plays tell us whats right and whats wrong , especially when it comes to going to school and not dropping out. We enjoy his plays and hope he is very succesful.

Honestly I respect Tyler Perry for staying true to what he does. Most people start hitting in the business and then become completely commercial. He has decided not to alienate the people who put him where he is. This is a man of loyalty and honor and nobody can say different. The stories he tells are his experience with life and other people. I like this slice of reality and if you don't MIGRATE! BYE

THANKS TYLER FOR BEING AN EXAMPLE AND MAKING IT HAPPEN FOR YOURSELF GOD BLESS!

I guess I'm one of those Blacks that do not like Perry's work but to be fair I'm not a fan of Oprah either. I find his Madea character to be annoying. Ultimately, Perry does family fare type stuff, but I don't really identify with the African American families he portrays. I don't hate his business savvy, or how he pulled himself up by his own bootstraps. I'm just not interested in his style of entertainment. He does not specialize in the genres that have always interested me (Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy). Personally I wish more African American directors would do the stuff I like. Because of my taste in movies I tend to like Black performers like Will Smith and Vin Diesel and the Rock.

I am happy for Tyler Perry's success. As an African American who has made millions of money from the black community-myself being one, we have a right to expect some social responsibility on his part in the portrayal of our communities. I have been waiting for better character development in his plays and have yet to see it. I applaud that he has opened up theater on a broader base to the black community, but it's scary to see other playwrights coming onto the scene and following Tyler Perry's pattern. I agree as stated in another comment that some of his productions are setting us back rather than moving us forward.

I don't thinks it's about the money or fame for Mr. Perry he's trying to tell a story of hope, you have to look deep into his movies and plays to grap's the concept, this man movies has moral, ethic and values at the center of them something that has gone out the door in Black America a long time ago......when I look at his plays and movies from my heart they sings sweets songs of forgiveness and redemption.

One thing we as black have to stop allowing one member of our race validate us, I am who I am because God said I am me, not one from my race can speak for me, but me, though man has tried to bind us in a box , I will never allow it for me and my kinds because I'm an individual who can think independently from her race, .....We must know who we are in order to embrace Mr. Perry's works such as I do........ His work is not offensive to me though I am a dark-skinned, big beautiful woman who happens to enjoy every one of my brothers movies, plays and sitcom, If anything he's truly and inspiration to the African American community. I 've learned that people are always going to criticize things they have no understanding about. Even Jesus had to deal with critic in his day ....Oh! one last thing...Nothing on earth is original, before he did it it was done by another, and before him another on down to the money in the cave! lol

Now that Barack Obama has been voted President, I hope all of you, dwelling on that race card, get over that, and judge according to quality or lack of it. If you stop looking at yourselves as just black people, and start being first and foremost HUMAN BEINGS, then the rest of the world is going to see that in you. And no House of Payne is going to offend you with stereotypes. I am African, I really like some Tyler Perry movies, and really dislike others. And it would have been the same if he was white.

Please leave that "black" thing aside. It's not trendy anymore :-)

Tyler Perry is a gifted black man and there's no way that man could copy anyone's work. He's truly annointed!!! Stop hatin and maybe the next thing you decide to write will be blessed also!!!!
  • Toussaint · 1 year ago
Just because you call garbage, "garbage" or a spade a "spade" doesnt make you a hater. Just because he makes money doesnt make his work less damagingly full of stereotypes. Great that he came from nothing and made a fortune. I can celebrate that but I cant cover my eyes and pretend like his works are not damaging to the image of young black professionals. Even if you just happen to like laughing at the ridiculous images and poor storylines in his movies, just remember that his films dont take the place of films like Eve's Bayou or Love Jones.
Why does "some" of our culture love to celebrate well marketed ignorance. Tyler Perry is right there with Soulja Boy and Soul Plane. Laugh at it but dont get it confused and call it good.
  • DNLee · 1 year ago
I don't care for his style of comedy, but I do like his use of unlikely characters to demonstrate Christian principles. I can take his productions in small doses. But I don't have a problem with him. I think it's people engaging in madness. So many of us don't know how to talk about issues or behaviors without making a personal attack. Same goes with criticism. Even if you criticize the act or product, people retaliate with personal lunges.

I think that's what is happening with TP.
  • Sergio · 11 months ago
I'm not African American, but I can say that I have enjoyed most of his work. I think what rubs people the wrong way about him is his need to stamp his name on everything. It is very obnoxious and unnecessary. It's not Francis Ford Coppola presents The Godfather or Steven Speilberg presents Jurrasic Park. It's the work that allows those directors to stand out. It just comes off as very arrogant that EVERYTHING he puts out has his name stamped on it. People are going to know he's responsible for his work. What is he afraid of? Tyler Perry present's Arrogant Jackass most of the time.

I hate Tyler Perry for the same reason I hate this website and all of the affiliations and advertisements on the side. I hate the idea of promoting any single ethnicity in this country. I hate the idea of black this and black that. I hate how acceptable it is in our society today. Why does every university in this country have a Black Student Union? Or a Hispanic Student Union? I was in the Student Boosters at Florida State University three years ago. At the start of Fall Semester, we developed a plan and raised money to send unfortunate black students home for Thanksgiving. As soon as we attempted to do the same for white students, the black students who did not qualify for the program were claiming it to be "racist." Because of them, 257 unfortunate white students did not get to see their families for the holiday. I'm not racist. But I can honestly say that until our society (blacks, whites, hispanics, asians) unites and considers themselves one, hate will exist. Tyler Perry, although his intentions may be good, he still has a hidden agenda which is to advance his African American bretheren.

Being a self-made man is respectable. However, this guy is a hack. His work sucks and it sets African-Americans back decades. There is a black man in the White House - time to be serious. Tyler Perry, you got your riches. Hang it up, for the greater good. Madea is the most annoying character in pop culture history and House of Payne needs to be pulled immediately.

His work ought to speak for itself, placing his name in front of everything he does comes off a little pretentious in my opinion.

I don't really despise him personally just what puts in his acting is what I hate from him. his character madea is funny but not when it comes to personal issues. I do not like how he express how whipping a child is a joke its not. its just wrong and it's abusive. even his co-acters are playing part of being violent and sedistic on their characters and he displays them on comedy shows. all of his perfomances he displays are the opposites of being comedic. he is better on being a polition or an activist but not a comedien. the man has emotion issues and it so not a good idea to express them in comedy shows. any comedien can be smarter than what tyler perry does!

Seems to me the reason the critics are hating on Tyleris professional jealousy. They're angry because this man has more talent and insight in his little finger on day than they have in their entire body throught their careers! Plus some people don't want to hear the truths in Tyler's plays or movies.

I dont understand why some commentors have a problem with him putting his name on everything, What is in a name? Tyler Perry is his brand and legal name and he has every right to use it whenever he likes and however he likes. His name in the title of movies has little to do with the content or character of his movies. If we cant enjoy movies made for us by us becuase we are afraid of what white people may think or say is a little tragic. If you truly dont like the movies because of the story line , theme, characters, etc. that is fine and understandable but to say it only exploites black people or emphasize stereotypes and shouldnt be enjoyed as art is ridiculous. Obviously people can relate to the stories and enjoy it just ask Oprah. As a young black woman I recognize Madea in some of my family members as sad and true that may be however, Tyler Perry is originally from my hometown so maybe its a South or New Orleans thing that seems to transcend other geographical areas.
The only opposition I have with Perry's work of art is sometimes the stories are corny and the story lines use to be too similar to one another.

I dont think that people hate on tyler perry, but why does he have to use profanity to get a point a cross in his movies. I thought he was a man of God. But like Donnie says that we all fall, but when is the point we must realize that we must get up. Dont get me wrong I love his work and thank God for the work he does, but the bible says to be not conformed to this world. I dont think that we as the people of God need to use , the worlds tactics to get are point across. Just one christian that lives and represents the Kingdom of God with everything I got. And also he is one of the hardest people in Christ to contact. It makes me wonder why the people of God have become so impersonal. I cant Judge, only God can do that, and I hope Tyler remains sucessfull, because it feels good to see a black man take who we are and can be to the next level.

... I just hate him... His comedy sucks, and he's too cocky.

I don't care about his acomplishments... So he went from the bottom to the top.. .. So did Hitler. Do you want me to like Hitler, too?

If you cannot do what the person is doing better than them, don't hate, be more productive. If you are focused you don't have time to hate people. Small minds do that.
  • Tyler Perry · 9 months ago
That's just the thing... He isn't funny.. So I, along with EVERYONE else, can do that better. So we can hate him. Also, you have a small mind : ) -------- also, I can use Hitler again to fight your argument. He can kill Jews better then most people; so your say we can't hate him? And is we do, we have small minds for it. Well well, seems to me we have a KKK member in our midst... And he likes Tyler Perry... Ironic.

"I can see if you do not care for his sense of humor or comedy style, but why hate on the man who came from nothing and made a huge success of himself?"
I don't like his cheesy humor. On the contrary, why must his success dictate whether or not I'm permitted to personally hold an opinion based solely on the merits of his craft? I hear this kind of reasoning often when it comes to African American entertainers, and it seems to be that whether it's P. Diddy, West, or Smith, that content is secondary to noting the accomplishment. Woods is a great golf player, and his accomplishment in the face of a white-dominated field is spectacular. But his success is measured by his performance on the golf course. I cannot deny by any measure that he excels in his field. When it comes to artistic media though, it is a matter of taste and opinion. I find Perry's movies to be somewhat of an insult because it is a generic mishmash of Lifetime meets BET, made for television filler. His character Madea epitomizes the Big Momma stereotype (meets Ernest P. Warrell) and the philosophical variation among characters is lacking. Why do critics hate it? Read what they have to say.

"Then again, not being a hater myself, I’ll just never understand the logic."
Because your opinion isn't logical. Just because he is popular and successful does not mean he is good. Kid Rock, Britney Spears, and vapid reality television producers manage to sell their product with amazing success and the money to back it up. Does that make what they have of more quality than a BB King record? A Mozart composition? A recording of an authentic tribal drum ceremony? These works transcend cultural lines, whereas crap like Madea is just cheap filler, maybe meant to be fun, but certainly not any more 'inspirational' than reading the religious cards at Hallmark after you've just read the humor section.
