I don't like his cheesy humor. On the contrary, why must his success dictate whether or not I'm permitted to personally hold an opinion based solely on the merits of his craft? I hear this kind of reasoning often when it comes to African American entertainers, and it seems to be that whether it's P. Diddy, West, or Smith, that content is secondary to noting the accomplishment. Woods is a great golf player, and his accomplishment in the face of a white-dominated field is spectacular. But his success is measured by his performance on the golf course. I cannot deny by any measure that he excels in his field. When it comes to artistic media though, it is a matter of taste and opinion. I find Perry's movies to be somewhat of an insult because it is a generic mishmash of Lifetime meets BET, made for television filler. His character Madea epitomizes the Big Momma stereotype (meets Ernest P. Warrell) and the philosophical variation among characters is lacking. Why do critics hate it? Read what they have to say.

Because your opinion isn't logical. Just because he is popular and successful does not mean he is good. Kid Rock, Britney Spears, and vapid reality television producers manage to sell their product with amazing success and the money to back it up. Does that make what they have of more quality than a BB King record? A Mozart composition? A recording of an authentic tribal drum ceremony? These works transcend cultural lines, whereas crap like Madea is just cheap filler, maybe meant to be fun, but certainly not any more 'inspirational' than reading the religious cards at Hallmark after you've just read the humor section.

He pays for people's college and offers to move families out of their current struggling society to a new home and environment with better opportunity. This man is such a true success story. I can not believe you people are on here speaking so ill of this man. But you know what?The fact of the matter is that Tyler is making something of his life despite what anyone of you have to say. I am a woman and Tyler is my mentor, he gives me hope that anyone, anyone can make it. Tyler could probably care less about any negative response that is thrown his way. At the end of the day, Tyler is making a difference in someone's life. Not to mention he's GETTING PAID and could tripple all yall's income numerous amount of times! So instead of dissing him you need to educate yourself on his strategie and GET LIKE HIM!!! HATERS!!!! But oh wait I forgot, haters don't succeed but the righteous always prevail. May all the success and much more money come to you Tyler! You are truly Blessed!!!!!!

I dont think that people hate on tyler perry, but why does he have to use profanity to get a point a cross in his movies. I thought he was a man of God. But like Donnie says that we all fall, but when is the point we must realize that we must get up. Dont get me wrong I love his work and thank God for the work he does, but the bible says to be not conformed to this world. I dont think that we as the people of God need to use , the worlds tactics to get are point across. Just one christian that lives and represents the Kingdom of God with everything I got. And also he is one of the hardest people in Christ to contact. It makes me wonder why the people of God have become so impersonal. I cant Judge, only God can do that, and I hope Tyler remains sucessfull, because it feels good to see a black man take who we are and can be to the next level.

I dont understand why some commentors have a problem with him putting his name on everything, What is in a name? Tyler Perry is his brand and legal name and he has every right to use it whenever he likes and however he likes. His name in the title of movies has little to do with the content or character of his movies. If we cant enjoy movies made for us by us becuase we are afraid of what white people may think or say is a little tragic. If you truly dont like the movies because of the story line , theme, characters, etc. that is fine and understandable but to say it only exploites black people or emphasize stereotypes and shouldnt be enjoyed as art is ridiculous. Obviously people can relate to the stories and enjoy it just ask Oprah. As a young black woman I recognize Madea in some of my family members as sad and true that may be however, Tyler Perry is originally from my hometown so maybe its a South or New Orleans thing that seems to transcend other geographical areas.
The only opposition I have with Perry's work of art is sometimes the stories are corny and the story lines use to be too similar to one another.

Seems to me the reason the critics are hating on Tyleris professional jealousy. They're angry because this man has more talent and insight in his little finger on day than they have in their entire body throught their careers! Plus some people don't want to hear the truths in Tyler's plays or movies.

I don't really despise him personally just what puts in his acting is what I hate from him. his character madea is funny but not when it comes to personal issues. I do not like how he express how whipping a child is a joke its not. its just wrong and it's abusive. even his co-acters are playing part of being violent and sedistic on their characters and he displays them on comedy shows. all of his perfomances he displays are the opposites of being comedic. he is better on being a polition or an activist but not a comedien. the man has emotion issues and it so not a good idea to express them in comedy shows. any comedien can be smarter than what tyler perry does!

Being a self-made man is respectable. However, this guy is a hack. His work sucks and it sets African-Americans back decades. There is a black man in the White House - time to be serious. Tyler Perry, you got your riches. Hang it up, for the greater good. Madea is the most annoying character in pop culture history and House of Payne needs to be pulled immediately.

I hate Tyler Perry for the same reason I hate this website and all of the affiliations and advertisements on the side. I hate the idea of promoting any single ethnicity in this country. I hate the idea of black this and black that. I hate how acceptable it is in our society today. Why does every university in this country have a Black Student Union? Or a Hispanic Student Union? I was in the Student Boosters at Florida State University three years ago. At the start of Fall Semester, we developed a plan and raised money to send unfortunate black students home for Thanksgiving. As soon as we attempted to do the same for white students, the black students who did not qualify for the program were claiming it to be "racist." Because of them, 257 unfortunate white students did not get to see their families for the holiday. I'm not racist. But I can honestly say that until our society (blacks, whites, hispanics, asians) unites and considers themselves one, hate will exist. Tyler Perry, although his intentions may be good, he still has a hidden agenda which is to advance his African American bretheren.

I'm not African American, but I can say that I have enjoyed most of his work. I think what rubs people the wrong way about him is his need to stamp his name on everything. It is very obnoxious and unnecessary. It's not Francis Ford Coppola presents The Godfather or Steven Speilberg presents Jurrasic Park. It's the work that allows those directors to stand out. It just comes off as very arrogant that EVERYTHING he puts out has his name stamped on it. People are going to know he's responsible for his work. What is he afraid of? Tyler Perry present's Arrogant Jackass most of the time.

I don't care for his style of comedy, but I do like his use of unlikely characters to demonstrate Christian principles. I can take his productions in small doses. But I don't have a problem with him. I think it's people engaging in madness. So many of us don't know how to talk about issues or behaviors without making a personal attack. Same goes with criticism. Even if you criticize the act or product, people retaliate with personal lunges.

I think that's what is happening with TP.

Just because you call garbage, "garbage" or a spade a "spade" doesnt make you a hater. Just because he makes money doesnt make his work less damagingly full of stereotypes. Great that he came from nothing and made a fortune. I can celebrate that but I cant cover my eyes and pretend like his works are not damaging to the image of young black professionals. Even if you just happen to like laughing at the ridiculous images and poor storylines in his movies, just remember that his films dont take the place of films like Eve's Bayou or Love Jones.
Why does "some" of our culture love to celebrate well marketed ignorance. Tyler Perry is right there with Soulja Boy and Soul Plane. Laugh at it but dont get it confused and call it good.

Now that Barack Obama has been voted President, I hope all of you, dwelling on that race card, get over that, and judge according to quality or lack of it. If you stop looking at yourselves as just black people, and start being first and foremost HUMAN BEINGS, then the rest of the world is going to see that in you. And no House of Payne is going to offend you with stereotypes. I am African, I really like some Tyler Perry movies, and really dislike others. And it would have been the same if he was white.

Please leave that "black" thing aside. It's not trendy anymore :-)

I don't thinks it's about the money or fame for Mr. Perry he's trying to tell a story of hope, you have to look deep into his movies and plays to grap's the concept, this man movies has moral,ethic and values at the center of them something that has gone out the door in Black America a long time ago......when I look at his plays and movies from my heart they sings sweets songs of forgiveness and redemption.

One thing we as black have to stop allowing one member of our race validate us, I am who I am because God said I am me, not one from my race can speak for me, but me, though man has tried to bind us in a box , I will never allow it for me and my kinds because I'm an individual who can think independently from her race, .....We must know who we are in order to embrace Mr. Perry's works such as I do........ His work is not offensive to me though I am a dark-skinned, big beautiful woman who happens to enjoy every one of my brothers movies, plays and sitcom, If anything he's truly and inspiration to the African American community. I 've learned that people are always going to criticize things they have no understanding about. Even Jesus had to deal with critic in his day ....Oh! one last thing...Nothing on earth is original, before he did it it was done by another, and before him another on down to the money in the cave! lol

I am happy for Tyler Perry's success. As an African American who has made millions of money from the black community-myself being one, we have a right to expect some social responsibility on his part in the portrayal of our communities. I have been waiting for better character development in his plays and have yet to see it. I applaud that he has opened up theater on a broader base to the black community, but it's scary to see other playwrights coming onto the scene and following Tyler Perry's pattern. I agree as stated in another comment that some of his productions are setting us back rather than moving us forward.

I agree with you, Blacksmythe, that House of Payne sets us back years. I'm seeing the show today for the first time as a rerun on network TV. I can't even watch it. I'm appalled. We would all be up in arms if this show was the product of Caucasians. The type of characters and humor that might work in a play, or a movie, doesn't necessarily work for television. Now he's bringing these foolish characters into the living rooms of America giving "them" (and you know who I mean) validation for their steoreotypes. The show makes us look like stupid, backwards fools. Someone commented that the show was bought for an unprecedented 100 episodes. I can just hear them in the backoffice, "Sure, let's buy 100 episodes. Who cares if the show is any good or not, it's worth it to show these people for their true colors. And we don't even get blamed; they're writing this stuff about themselves." Mind you, I am very proud of what Mr. Perry has accomplished and I loved most of his plays, but at some point he has to take responsibility for kind of image that he's putting out there when it comes to television which is seen by the masses over and over again. We've worked hard for even the smallest of rights and respect. and he's, like you said, setting us back. One thing that I don't think Mr. Perry ever does, is to consult with our folks who have already gained respect, such as Bill Cosby to name one. Because Mr. Perry has been successful, he thinks whatever choices he makes are the best choices. He doesn't even know how to choose good actors but I digress.
